Southern Ohio Bigfoot Sightings
Two anonymous accounts from the southern Ohio corridor — collected for a book in progress.

“Was That Bigfoot”
— Anonymous, Southern Ohio
I've spent a lot of time in the southern Ohio woods. Hiking, hunting, just walking. I know the sounds those hills make — the way the wind comes through the hardwoods, the way deer move through the brush, the difference between a turkey scratching and something heavier setting its weight down. I thought I knew everything that lived back there.
It was a Saturday in late October. I was alone, working a trail I'd hiked a dozen times, heading toward a ridgeline I like for the view. The leaves were down, so visibility was good — maybe sixty, seventy feet into the tree line on either side. No fog. Clear afternoon. I wasn't expecting anything unusual.
About a mile in, I started hearing something moving along the tree line to my left. Not crossing the trail — staying parallel to it. Matching my pace. I told myself it was a deer, maybe a group of them, browsing along the edge. I slowed down. The sound slowed down. I stopped. It stopped.
I stood there for a full thirty seconds. Nothing. Then I took two steps forward. Two steps worth of sound came from the trees on my left. Whatever was in there was not a deer. Deer don't track you. Deer don't stop when you stop and start when you start. This was something that knew I was there and was choosing to stay with me.
I turned and looked directly into the tree line. For a moment I didn't see anything — just deadfall and bare trunks. Then it shifted. And I saw it.
It was standing upright behind a cluster of oaks, partially screened by the branches. Dark — not black, but a very deep brown, almost charcoal. The bulk of it was wrong. Way too wide for a man, way too tall. The arms hung lower than any person's arms. It wasn't moving the way an animal moves. It was standing the way a person stands when they're watching something. Still. Deliberate. Aware.
I didn't run. I don't know why. My feet just didn't move. I watched it and it watched me and we stayed like that for what felt like two or three minutes but was probably thirty seconds. Then it turned — slowly, no hurry at all — and moved deeper into the woods. Not crashing. Not fleeing. Just walking away, like it had decided it was done with me.
I stood in that trail until I couldn't hear it anymore. Then I walked back to my truck. I didn't run. I don't know why I didn't run.
I've been back to that stretch of trail twice since then. Both times I found something worth noting — a broken branch at about nine feet high, a depression in the soft ground that I couldn't match to anything I know. I don't go alone anymore.
I still don't have a word for what I saw.

Account two
“There Are Bigfoot in Ohio”
— Anonymous, Minerva, Ohio
I grew up in Minerva. If you know the name, you probably know why — the 1978 incident put this town on the map in ways most locals would rather forget. There were sightings all through that summer, a family out on a coal slag hill, reports that made national news for a week and then disappeared. I was too young to remember it firsthand, but I grew up hearing it.
I didn't believe any of it. That's important to say. I was the person at the table who changed the subject when someone brought it up at a family dinner. Small town, strange summer, forty-some years ago. People remember things wrong. I believed that completely.
This was maybe three years ago, late September. I was driving home on one of the back roads I've taken my whole life — the kind of road where you know every curve, every farm, every tree line. It was just past nine at night. No other cars. My headlights were the only light for a quarter mile in any direction.
I came around a long bend and my headlights swept the right shoulder of the road. And something was standing there. At the very edge of the pavement, where the gravel meets the field grass.
Massive. Upright. Not a deer, not a bear, not a man. The scale of it was wrong for everything I could think to name. It was easily eight feet tall — maybe more. The shoulders were broad in a way that seemed structurally impossible for a person. Dark hair or fur, I couldn't tell which, but I could see the texture of it in my headlights.
It turned to look at the car. The eyes caught my headlights the way a deer's eyes will sometimes — a brief, flat reflection. It wasn't a deer's reflection. The eyes were too high off the ground, too far apart. It looked at me the way something looks at you when it isn't afraid of you.
Then it stepped back into the dark. One step. Two. And it was gone — not running, not spooked, just done with being seen. The field grass where it had been standing was still moving when my headlights reached it.
I sat there for a full minute with the engine running and my hands on the wheel. I didn't move. I didn't get out. I didn't call anyone. I just sat there and let my heart settle until I trusted myself to drive.
I've told this to exactly two people since it happened. One of them looked at me the way I used to look at people who brought up 1978.
I grew up here. I know this road. Whatever that was, it wasn't from here.
